If you are looking for a rare and unusual mineral to add to your collection and join your other wonders, here is our selection of botryoidal or grape chalcedony, mistakenly called grape agate (no, it is not an agate at all!).

Originating from the island of Sulawesi, in Indonesia, botryoidal chalcedony is made of quartz crystallites strangely resembling a bunch of grapes. Mainly purple with some light to very dark shades for the rarest ones, white, gray or green botryoidal chalcedony can also be found.

Characteristics of botryoidal chalcedony:

  • Length: 10.1cm
  • Width: 5.8cm
  • Height: 3.5cm
  • Weight: 214g
  • Hardness of chalcedony: 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale
  • Variety of chalcedony in the form of microcrystalline quartz

Aspects of grape chalcedony:

Rare in form and appearance, here is our largest botryoidal chalcedony from Indonesia, weighing over 210g, offered by Terrae Minéraux. In terms of its formation, our chalcedony is made of microcrystals of quartz compacted together to form the core and the largest part of the stone. On top, you will also find numerous larger and well-formed "grapes," ranging from less than 1mm to more than 6mm in diameter for some. Its color, however, is a visual enigma. You will mostly admire a green stone with some pale purple nuances present all over it when you look at it in natural light. However, when you put it in contact with light from a lamp, for example, you will then admire a stone that is more purple than green (see the presentation video), which makes it a quality and uncommon chalcedony. The stand provided with the chalcedony will mainly serve to hold it upright with your other collection stones.

Note: Particular care has been taken to best respect the natural colors of the minerals offered to you. The photos are taken in the best conditions, and slightly retouched to best approximate the original stone. However, there may be slight contrasts due to your different screens used and their brightness.
